How do I switch servers for a site that’s already backed up on CodeGuard?

February 10, 2021 in Website Backup

At this time, CodeGuard does not support migrating your website to a new server using our automated restore process. However, you can download a version of your backup as a zip file and use that to transfer your content to your new server using an FTP or SFTP client. After moving to a new server, you can follow the steps below to restart your CodeGuard backups.

Switching servers has a number of implications for your backup. A new server will often mean that all of the paths to your files will change, the user and group associated with your content may change and the permissions for the files may change. In order to ensure consistency in the event that you need to restore your website content, we strongly recommend that you remove the backup that was created from your old website and create a new backup from your new server.

If you would like to switch servers for a website that is already backed up on CodeGuard, follow these steps:

  1. Download a zip file backup of the site you would like to switch. To do this, click on the “Restore” tab in your CodeGuard dashboard. Next, click “Restore Options” and then “Request Zip” (see this video tutorial for a walkthrough).
  2. Add your site to the new server via FTP/SFTP. This step will vary depending on your hosting provider.
  3. Delete the site hosted on your old server. To delete a website, click on the “Settings” tab in your CodeGuard dashboard, scroll down to “Delete Website” and click the link below.
  4. Re-add your site to CodeGuard under your new server. Adding a website will vary depending on your type of plan. See this article for more help on adding a website: How do I add another website

If you are signed up for our Personal Plan, you will need to delete the old website before you're able to add your site to your account again.
